Mission and History
“The mission of the Society is to promote the discovery, advancement, and dissemination of basic and translational knowledge in experimental pathology and related disciplines. This shall be achieved by fostering investigation into the pathogenesis, classification, diagnosis, and manifestations of disease through meetings, publications, and educational activities.”
The American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP) is a society of biomedical scientists who investigate mechanisms of disease. Investigative pathology is an integrative discipline that links the presentation of disease in the whole organism to its fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms. It uses a variety of structural, functional, and genetic techniques and ultimately applies research findings to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. ASIP advocates for the practice of investigative pathology and fosters the professional career development and education of its members.
ASIP welcomes basic and clinical biomedical research scientists as active members.
ASIP has two divisions: the International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER), and the Pulmonary Pathology Society (PPS)
ASIP is a member of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), a coalition of 22 independent societies that plays an active role in lobbying for the interests of 84,000 biomedical scientists.

International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics
Background:
Man's use of xenobiotics dates from antiquity but interest in foreign compound metabolism dates from only the mid-19th century when the knowledge and techniques of organic chemistry were first applied to its study. For nearly a century thereafter biotransformation was generally equated with "detoxication" or the elimination of a compound's biological activity.
This view changed in the late 1930s with the discovery that the synthetic azo-dye Prontosil owed its life-saving antibacterial activity to its metabolite, sulfanilamide. Since the 1950s the biological effects of numerous xenobiotic substances have been shown to be due to biotransformation products rather than the parent compound. The importance of biotransformation and other aspects of the interaction of xenobiotics with living systems has not escaped the notice of regulatory agencies worldwide. Their need for scientific knowledge on which to base regulations and safety evaluations for chemicals and drugs provides one important motivation for the study of xenobiotics.
Of necessity, scientists working in such diverse fields as clinical and basic pharmacology, biochemistry, toxicology and oncology became drawn into metabolism studies, both in universities and research institutes and in the pharmaceutical, chemical, agro-chemical, food processing, tobacco and cosmetic industries. In 1981, a small group of scientists, brought together during the 1970s under the aegis of the Gordon Research Conferences on Drug Metabolism, took the bold step of suggesting the organization of an international society to promote the interaction of scientists dedicated broadly to the study of xenobiotics in living systems. Thus the International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics was formed.

The American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) was founded in 1900, and consists of over 1,900 professionals whose primary interest is to promote and advance the science of human pharmacology and therapeutics. The Society is the largest scientific and professional organization serving the Discipline of Clinical Pharmacology. Most of the members are physicians (69%) or other doctoral scientists (29%). Pharmacists, nurses, research coordinators, fellows in training, and other professionals make up the remaining 2%.
As a learned society, our primary concerns are better understanding and use of existing drug therapies, and developing better and safer treatments for the future. Our memberships' unique combination of scientific and clinical expertise makes them especially qualified to understand the impact of disease on patients, the compelling need for effective drug therapy and the efforts necessary to meet those needs. Such efforts include research, exchange of scientific information, consideration of legislation and regulations that affect drug development and utilization, and education.
The Society's annual meeting is held in March and has been increasing in size each year. It is now three days long, and consists of several comprehensive state-of-the-art lectures, featured speakers and numerous symposia, and over 350 scientific presentations. Attendance at our annual meeting is in excess of 1,000. The annual meeting not only provides a setting for the presentation of new scientific work and review of recent advances, but also provides an important opportunity for members from all sections within the Society, as well as non-members, to meet and discuss areas of common interest and concern. Presentations at the annual meeting relate to mechanisms of action, drug metabolism, drug safety and efficacy, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, study methodology, education, and other aspects of clinical pharmacology. The Society is accredited as a Category I sponsor of continuing medical education for physicians and the annual meeting provides attendees with CME credit. The Society is also approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmaceutical education and provides attendees with CPE credit.
